Incredible Leadership Opportunity for Local High School Students!

Posted .

boy & girl of the year fundraiser Did you know that 1.3 MILLION Americans are currently living or are in remission from leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma? September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, a time that’s intended to bring attention to the countless patients and families dealing with these diseases so that everyone can lend a helping hand. At Shirck Orthodontics, we’re big supporters of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the world’s largest volunteer, non-profit health agency dedicated to the study and treatment of blood cancers. This cause hits really close to home because our own Operations Manager, Zhenia, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2005, and the LLS provided a ton of support during her treatment. To give back, we sponsor their big local fundraiser every year in which two lucky high school students have a chance to directly help those in need. To learn more about this opportunity, read on below!

The primary missions of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society are to raise awareness of blood cancer in America as well as encourage the donation of funds that help contribute to lifesaving research and treatment.

One of the ways the Central Ohio chapter of the LLS gets their message out is by running the Boy & Girl of the Year campaign, which selects smart, passionate student leaders to serve as spokespersons for the organization. Many students are nominated by their teachers and parents, and ultimately, two will receive the award at a big fundraising banquet and then have the chance to really make a difference in people’s lives by representing the Society at a multitude of events. As an orthodontist that gives back, Shirck Orthodontics is proud to be a part of this effort and contribute to the campaign so that it gets the spotlight it deserves. After all the help they gave Zhenia, it’s the least we can do!

If you’re a parent with a child in high school, please let them know about the Boy & Girl of the Year campaign. If selected, your child will speak at other fundraising events, motivate people to contribute donations, and share patient stories to help support a cause we can all believe in. If you’re not a parent, please spread the word about the campaign to any that you know, and you can always donate directly to the LLS yourself. Even a contribution as little as $5 can make a HUGE difference for families battling these diseases.
