What is “orthodontics”?

Orthodontics is a recognized dental specialty used to help patients straighten crooked teeth and repair or prevent other kinds of dental and facial issues.

How is an orthodontist and general dentist different?

An orthodontist is a specialist that first becomes and dentist and then receives two to three years of extra training beyond dental school.

When should treatment with braces begin?

Many patients are in their teens or slightly younger, but one third of our patients are adults. The American Association of Orthodontists has recommended that children should see an orthodontist for the first time around the age of seven.

What's the best way to care for my teeth if I have braces or a retainer?

Patients with braces or a retainer should brush at least twice a day, or after every meal, if possible. Patients should also floss once a day and add a mouthwash to their daily regimen. To protect your braces, avoid foods that are sugary, chewy, crunchy, or too hard. Cleaning your retainer with a toothbrush and regularly soaking it in a denture solution is also important.

Be sure to visit your regular dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning.

  • Traditional
  • Clear
  • Ceramic

  • Gold
  • Lingual
  • Self-ligating
  • WildSmiles

How long does orthodontic treatment last?

The average treatment will take approximately 15-18 months, but treatment times vary greatly depending on the complexity of an individual’s case.

Is treatment with braces uncomfortable?

Treatment with braces can cause soreness, but as your mouth becomes accustomed to your braces, that will subside.

How often should I brush my teeth?

Preferably after every meal. It's easy for food to get caught between teeth and around braces. With daily brushing and flossing, you can protect your teeth from cavities as you work your way towards a straighter smile.

How important are six month checkups?

A good brushing and flossing routine can only carry you so far. To make sure that you're enjoying top-notch oral health, see your dentist at least twice a year for a thorough exam and professional cleaning.

If I'm an athlete or musician, how will braces change my life?

Getting braces will require some adjustment, but athletes and musicians will be relieved to know that life can go on as normal. However, we do recommend that athletes wear a mouthguard to protect their teeth and braces.

How do I schedule my next appointment?
