4 Tips for Easy Flossing with Braces

It’s extremely important to keep your teeth clean while wearing braces, because nothing throws off the treatment faster than a surprise cavity! While brushing with orthodontics is relatively straightforward, flossing is a whole other matter. The way you usually do it probably won’t work with the brackets and wires, but this doesn’t mean you have to skip this essential part of your oral hygiene routine. According to your orthodontist in Powell, flossing with braces can be relatively simple—just make sure you follow these 4 tips!

Use a Threader

A floss threader is a small, flexible plastic loop you can use to literally thread a piece of floss between your teeth under your wires. From there, it’s business as usual! You’ll need to rethread between each tooth, and while this may require a little more time compared to regular flossing, it’s definitely worth it, as this will help you clean parts of your mouth that your brush can’t reach.

A Different Kind of Brush

Of course, you aren’t restricted to only using regular floss with braces. Interproximal brushes are tiny and are ideal for removing stubborn food particles that get caught behind wires and brackets. You can pick up a pack at any grocery store or pharmacy, and they are great to use throughout the day as well as in the evening. After a meal, just run the small bristles between your teeth to remove any leftover bits—this will help keep your breath fresh as well!

A Splash of Water

A water flosser uses a thin, steady stream of water to remove plaque and food particles from the teeth, and they are excellent for cleaning areas that toothbrushes and floss can’t reach. Even those without braces can benefit from using one, but they are especially helpful for those with orthodontics, as they can be used to target frequent trouble spots.

Start Swishing

Do you use mouthwash? If not, now is a great time to start! After you have brushed and flossed, a quick rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash won’t only make your mouth feel fresh, but it will also flush away any food particles you might have missed. There are countless types of mouthwashes available today, but be sure to get a non-alcoholic variety, as this won’t dry your mouth out.

Flossing with braces is a little more involved, but the few extra minutes it requires will go a long way in making sure your teeth stay healthy and strong while they are being straightened. With these tips, you’re guaranteed to be greeted by sparkling white teeth the day your braces come off.
