5 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Got Invisalign in Westerville

Posted .

person holding Invisalign trayAt Shirck Orthodontics, we’ve been able to help countless adults finally straighten their teeth after years of avoiding metal braces thanks to Invisalign in Westerville. The treatment is subtle, discreet, and most patients say that their friends and coworkers don’t notice anything about their teeth until they are completely straight! We talked to them this past month and asked them, “What do you wish you knew about Invisalign before getting it?” Below, you’ll find the 5 most common things they told us!

1. “A little pain is normal”

Right after a patient puts a new set of Invisalign trays in, they might feel a bit of pain in their teeth and gums. Don’t worry, this is completely normal, and it just means that the treatment is doing what it’s supposed to—applying a small pressure to the teeth to gradually move them into the correct positions. This should go away after a few days of wearing them consistently. If there is one particular spot on a tray that is causing a problem, you can place a little dental wax over it or just come see us so we can shave it down a bit.

2. “Don’t worry about the lisp”

Invisalign can slightly affect your speech if you’re not used to it, causing some to develop a minor lisp. While it might be extremely noticeable to patients themselves, friends, family, and coworkers likely won’t even realize it’s happening. It should go away on its own after some time has passed, and the more you talk with your Invisalign trays, the faster you will get used to them. If the lisp doesn’t seem to be going away, this could indicate that your trays aren’t fitting properly, so you should give us a call so we can adjust them!

3. “Changes happen right away!”

The average treatment time for an adult using Invisalign is about one year, but you’ll probably start noticing a difference in your teeth way before that. Most patients say that they can see changes after as little as two to three months.

4. “No more sipping!”

Invisalign works best if patients wear their trays as much as possible. While it’s okay to drink water while wearing them, that’s pretty much it. If a patient is going to enjoy something like coffee or juice, we recommend that they take their trays out, drink relatively quickly, brush their teeth, and put them back in. Because of this, many patients say that they slightly altered their diet on Invisalign and ended up losing a few pounds as a result!

5. “Caring for Invisalign is easy”

Many of the patients we talked to were hesitant to start Invisalign because they thought it would add a lot of time to their oral hygiene routine. Fortunately, this isn’t the case! We recommend brushing your trays with toothpaste in the morning and evening and rinsing them out before you put them back in after eating. It’s also a good idea to soak your trays in a mild-denture cleaner from time to time. Altogether, it only takes a few minutes a day to keep your trays nice and clean.
