Treating a Misaligned Jaw

and Why It Matters

Closeup of healthy smile

It’s easy to think that all your orthodontist really does is straighten teeth. While that is a big part of what we do here at Shirck Orthodontics, it’s certainly not all we do. We can also use our treatments to correct jaw alignment problems. Just like with the alignment of your teeth, it can affect a person both aesthetically and functionally, and treatment can often lead to drastic improvements in both. Today, we’re going to discuss why your jaw alignment matters, and how the team here at Shirck Orthodontics can help you with it.

Living with a Misaligned Jaw

The alignment of your jaw directly affects how your teeth come together, which is referred to as your “occlusion.” A “malocclusion” is when the teeth do not come together properly, and this can lead to a variety of issues.

First, as is the case with an overbite, under bite, or cross bite, it can affect how a person looks. This can be especially problematic for children as this can negatively impact their self-esteem, and it often lends itself to teasing from other children as well. For adults, it can simply make them self-conscious and less outgoing.

There is also the matter of the jaw’s function, which is essential to eating, speaking, and even breathing. A misaligned jaw can hinder all of these functions and make them extremely uncomfortable, which in the case of children, can alter or even halt their development. A misaligned bite can also put strain on the sensitive jaw joints, which in turn can cause chronic pain in the face, neck, head, and even the shoulders and back.

How We Can Help

Fortunately, we’re able to offer a number of treatments that can correct jaw alignment and occlusion problems that don’t require invasive surgery.

Depending on a person’s particular jaw issue and its severity, we can often correct it over the course of a regular braces treatment or with the help of a specialized orthodontic appliance. When you come into Shirck Orthodontics with a malocclusion, Dr. Jeff or Dr. Jen will first determine your jaw’s proper alignment using a number of diagnostic tests, and then they’ll recommend a treatment plan that will gradually bring it into alignment. Thanks to our years of experience and familiarity with a wide variety of treatments, we’re able to handle almost any jaw issue that’s presented to us so our patients always end up with healthy, beautiful, and functional smiles.
