Life with Braces for Adults
It’s Never Too Late for a Straight Smile
Are you self-conscious about your crooked, crowded, or gapped teeth? If so, then you’re in the same boat as many other adults, and you might think that there is nothing you can do about it since you missed the chance to have braces as a child. Thankfully, at Shirck Orthodontics, your orthodontist in Columbus is able to help patients of all ages achieve strong, healthy, and beautiful smiles! Life with braces for adults is notably different compared to children, but the results can still be stunning and last a lifetime.
Common Reasons Adults Consider Orthodontic Treatment
While many adults think about undergoing orthodontic treatment for purely aesthetic reasons, getting braces can do much more than just boost your appearance and confidence. Properly aligned teeth also tend to be healthier, as there are fewer traps and small gaps where plaque and bacteria can be missed while brushing and flossing. When the bite is well balanced, this can also make speaking and eating more comfortable, plus for many patients, it’s able to stop chronic jaw pain and headaches associated with TMJ (temporomandibular joint) issues.
Types of Braces for Adults
If you’re worried about having to face friends and work colleagues with a mouthful of metal braces, you can put those concerns to bed right now! Shirck Orthodontics offers a variety of adult-friendly options that are sleek and discreet while still being able to fix a wide variety of orthodontic issues.
Invisalign is the most popular, as the treatment itself is virtually invisible. A patient just wears a series of clear plastic mouth trays that slowly bring their teeth into the ideal orientation.
Or, adults also tend to gravitate to clear/ceramic braces. These work using the same bracket and wire method as regular braces, but they have a much, much more subtle appearance because the appliance is made using transparent and tooth-colored materials. These are better for addressing more advanced issues compared to Invisalign.
The Big Difference Between Orthodontics for Adults & Children
The main difference between getting orthodontic treatment as a child versus being an adult is time. The reason orthodontic care is so effective for children is because the bones in their jaws and mouths haven’t set yet, meaning it’s easier to direct their growth and development with braces and other appliances.
For adults, their fully set bones will still respond to treatment, but it will just take more time, which may call for more progress appointments as a result. And, if there is an advanced issue with the alignment of the jaw (such as a pronounced overbite or underbite), the only option may be corrective surgery, whereas a child might just need to wear headgear. Thankfully, a little patience can easily lead to a lifetime of stunning smiles for our adult patients. To learn more about your options with us, be sure to schedule a FREE consultation today!
