Life with Braces
Once you settle on a braces system appropriate to your needs, you might wonder how your life will change. Below, we've listed some of the most common things to keep in mind as you start the treatment process.
With traditional braces, you'll want to avoid foods that are chewy or sticky, like candy or gum. It is also wise to avoid crunchy foods (read: chips or popcorn) or foods that are hard, like nuts. Lastly, you should avoid foods that require you to bite into them, like corn on the cob or apples.
Foods that you can still eat with braces include:
- Soft cheeses and other dairy products
- Soft fruits and vegetables
- Desserts like ice cream, Jello, or cake.
Giving up on some foods may be tough, but avoiding them will help you complete your treatment according to schedule and without injuring your brackets or wires.
A Tender Smile
Has your smile felt tender or sore since getting braces? This is normal and will eventually fade. Until then, you can treat your discomfort by rinsing with saltwater or taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. If your braces irritate your lips, cheeks, or tongue, you protect them with a special type of wax. LetDr. Shirck know about your discomfort and we will provide you with some.
Do your teeth feel looser now that you have braces? This is also normal. Before your teeth can be moved into their ideal position, they have to be loosened. As they become loose, they are free to move into alignment, transforming your smile and improving your oral health.
