Emergency Care

Are you having an orthodontic emergency? Give our Pataskala, New Albany, Westerville or Newark location a call immediately. Depending on your situation, we may want to see you now, or we may schedule an appointment to address the issue. Even if we can't see you right away, notifying us immediately is important, especially if your appliance is broken or out of place. A damaged appliance is one that's not working as it should and could negatively impact your treatment if not repaired quickly.

Below, We Offer Tips to Help You Manage Your Situation Until We Can See You.

General Soreness

It's natural for patients to experience some soreness for the first three to five days of care. To relieve discomfort, rinse with saltwater or use an over-the-counter pain reliever like Orabase. If your discomfort is very strong, take Tylenol, Advil, Aspirin or other pain reliever.

If your lips, cheeks and tongue feel irritation, we can give you some wax during your visits and show you how to use it. The wax will protect your mouth from irritation.

Headgear

You may experience some discomfort when you first wear your headgear, but this will fade if you're following the instructions you received from Dr. Shirck. If the facebow is bent, give us a call and we will help you fix it.

Loose Appliance

If your appliance has come lose and is poking you, wax will alleviate the discomfort until we can see you.

Loose Bracket

If your bracket or band is loose but still attached to the wire, apply wax to the end. If the bracket is no longer attached to the wire, store it safely in a tissue and give us a call.

Loose Wire

Try to put the wire back in place using tweezers. If it's poking you, apply a small amount of wax. If you can't get the wire back into position, clip the wire behind the last tooth that it's securely fastened to with fingernail clippers, but only as a last resort. Use wax as needed to alleviate discomfort.

Poking Wire

If a wire is poking you, wax will prevent further irritation. You can also push the wire down using a pencil eraser.
